The European Union has been committed for a long time in environmental protection and sustainability. The 7th Environment Action Program to 2020 affirms that “In 2050, we live well within the planet’s ecological limits. Our prosperity and healthy environment stem from an innovative, circular economy where nothing is wasted and where natural resources are managed sustainably, and biodiversity is protected, valued and restored in ways that enhance our society’s resilience.”

The EU sets an ambitious objective for 2050 and it requires the commitment of every European citizen to be reached. Practically, everyone is called to become more aware of environmental conditions, the use of resources and the impact that daily life actions have on our planet. As a consequence, we need to better ponder our consumption choices, reduce waste and extend the life cycle of resources. The UN also stressed the importance of environment protection, including different aspects of it in the Sustainable Development Goals, which aim to end poverty, save the planet and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. Youth has a key role in this pictured framework: “Young people are key actors in raising awareness, running educational programmes, promoting sustainable lifestyles, conserving nature, supporting renewable energy, adopting environmentally-friendly practices and implementing adaptation and mitigation projects. [UNFCCC]”.

Young people are generally more aware and keen to take action, but they may feel disoriented and without practical directions to follow. Our project “Green-Yourself” (starting January 1 2020) aims at filling this gap: to increase awareness and critical reasoning on environmental-related topics, to develop concrete actions to be taken to positively and daily impact on the environment and to further disseminate the achievements of the project. In order to do so, we and our partners will organize a youth exchange: it will last 7 days (June, 14-19; 20 as travel day) and it will involve 31 young people aged 18-25.

Each delegation (4 participants+ 1 leader) will include people coming from disadvantaged backgrounds. The APV will be on April, 25-26. The exchange will take place in Florence, Italy. The city has shown growing interest in adopting green solutions and in fighting non-sustainable behaviours, also given the number of tourists that crowd the city and that generally do not have an environmental-friendly impact. Various institutional and grass-root initiatives are taking place, so they represent a stimulating milieu for the participants. Moreover, the Tuscany region has been an Italian pioneer for recycling and various “Zero waste” municipalities set good practices to be followed. Every day, participants will focus on different aspects of environment conservation related to our daily human activity (such as recycling, reusing, ethical consumerism…) using non-formal methods of learning (role-play, b
